Are Fremont Schools Actually Good?

By Paarth Shah, REALTORĀ® · July 24, 2026 · Fremont

Short answer: yes, Fremont Unified School District (in Fremont, California, Alameda County) grades out as a strong district, but the honest version has more nuance than a single rating can carry.

Start with the district-wide picture. Public School Review ranks Fremont Unified in roughly the top 5% of California districts, and reports an average math proficiency near 69% versus a statewide average around 34%, and reading proficiency near 77% versus roughly 47% statewide. On the state's own California School Dashboard, Fremont Unified has posted "Blue" performance levels (the highest band) in both English Language Arts and Mathematics in recent reporting. By the numbers, the district clears the state bar comfortably.

The standout names live at the top of the range. Mission San Jose High School is frequently ranked in the top 1% of California schools and appears in U.S. News national rankings, with reported proficiency in the low 90s for both math and reading. Schools like that are a real part of Fremont's reputation.

Here is the honest caveat. A district average is a blend. Fremont Unified spans five attendance areas (American, Irvington, Kennedy, Mission, and Washington), and school quality is not uniform across all of them. The very top schools pull the average up, while other campuses land closer to solid-but-average. So "are Fremont schools good" depends heavily on which school your specific address is assigned to, not just the district name.

That variation has a price attached. The most sought-after zones, Mission San Jose in particular, tend to carry a premium on home values precisely because buyers compete to get in. Strong schools drive demand, and demand drives price. A home two miles away in a different attendance area can be assigned to a very different school and priced accordingly.

One more thing worth saying plainly: the ratings above come from third parties (Public School Review, U.S. News, GreatSchools, Niche) and from state assessment data, and all of it changes year to year. Treat any specific number as a snapshot, not a permanent fact, and verify the current assignment for any address before you rely on it.

If you are weighing a Fremont neighborhood partly for its schools and want help matching a home to the right attendance area, I am glad to talk it through. You can reach me through the contact page or at paarth@brokerbela.com.
